End of Year Function and Eleanor Palmer Competition

On Thursday 27 November we had our final Members' meeting for 2014 and end of year party, which is also the occasion for awarding the Eleanor Palmer Trophy.

We were graced by the presence of a special guest for the evening - Rembrandt van Rijn! A small self-portrait was borrowed from the Michael Collection at the Old Town House, where a Rembrandt exhibition is currently on display.

We had a lovely evening, with a relaxed party atmosphere,
livened up by an art quiz, compiled and supervised by
Christine Cherry-Jones and Ros Molteno. Thanks ladies,
that was fun. Although it did make some of us realise
how much we've actually forgotten!

There were many beautiful paintings submitted
for the competition, so it was difficult choosing
a "favourite favourite", but when all the votes
were tallied, Laura Wenman's "Gypsy" came out
on top. Congratulations Laura, on a very well
deserved win!

Well done as well to the runners up - Bill Brown's landscape and Haydee Breganski's portrait were voted in second and third place.

Thanks to all who contributed to making this an enjoyable and successful event.

Sketching Hike to Silvermine

This morning a small, but intrepid group
of sketchers braved the elements and hiked
from the Silvermine dam to the viewpoint overlooking Hout Bay.

We set off in sunshine, but there was a chilly wind and thick cloud pouring off the mountain at the top.

The spectacular view more than made up for the less than perfect weather and once settled in sheltered spots, we were spoiled for choice of composition.

We walked down windswept, but content, with
some new pages in our sketch books filled with
             inspiration.
