September Monthly Meeting

On Thursday 25 September the judges from
the selection weekend - Riaan Cronje, Jenny
Parsons and David Oertel - joined us at our
members' meeting to critique works which
had been presented for selection, but not
necessarily been chosen for the annual

They explained their personal criteria for the
allocation of points and what they looked for
in an artwork. We were shown what makes an
artwork work well and what doesn't.

They all did a fine job of offering
      constructive criticism. Not only showing
us the faults in a painting, but giving us a
      way of correcting them too.

 Many queries were very satisfactorily
 answered and solutions given.

It was a most useful and informative evening
for all who attended. Thanks, judges.

2nd SASA Members' Exhibition for 2014

On Monday 1 September, the Sanlam exhibition hall at Kirstenbosch was a hive of activity, as busy teams of workers hung the artworks for exhibition. There were over 600 works in all, including the portfolio pieces and space had to be found for all of them. Thanks to Sylvia de Villiers for a well run hanging!

The function later that evening was well attended,
and the exhibition officially opened by Ayesha Price,
principal of the Children's Art Centre in Zonnebloem.

She told us of her love of art from a very
young age and her passion for sharing it
with less privileged children, who would
not necessarily be exposed to it, or get the chance to explore their own creativity
otherwise. Thank you Ayesha.

Kirstenbosch has, for the past few days, had a steady
stream of visitors, attracted by the wonderfully warm
Spring weather, which is perfect for us - a nice
collection of red-dotted "sold" labels is gathering on
               the wall.

Thanks to everyone involved, for your hard work (especially
Mary for her usual sterling catering job and Adrian and Jeremy
who ran the bar) it couldn't happen without you.

Etching Workshop with Nicholas Esterhuizen

On the last weekend in August a few fortunate SASA members were treated to a two day etching workshop with Nicholas Esterhuizen. Nicholas has studied internationally, is a skilled artist and an experienced art teacher.

We were taken through the whole wonderful process, from planning, to printing, which opened up a whole new avenue of art for some of us and reminded others how very rewarding etching can be.

Though the process is time consuming and needs a lot of patience, the end result is so pleasing, it makes it all worthwhile. It's a magical feeling when you unveil your print after rolling the plate  through the press.

Thank you Nicholas - and Anastasia, his wife and assistant - for a great workshop. I think we would've all been quite happy to spend a few more days in the studio with you!

Noordhoek Paint Our August

We had a wonderful but chilly paint out in August at Long Beach. WOW, the scenery is just spectacular. We will plan this one again as there are many, many differant subjects to paint or sketch.
Please join us on the next outing, even if it is just to take referance photos for later use. You will be missing out if you don't !!
