Margie Johnson Art Demo

Margie Johnson's demo in the end of October, was a great success. She covered her paper in Gesso, let it dry, and then painted watercolour on top. This left wonderful marks, it can be manipulated, and achieves that transparent look you get from watercolour paintings

Such an exciting medium to work with and a lot more forgiving than normal watercolour. I am sure there will be a lot of artists experimenting out there after seeing Margie paint this beautiful still life.

from Tokai to Rondebosch

We spent a wonderful day visiting four Art studios of some of our SASA members.
Many thanks to June Hyman, Claudia Treagus. Mike Forester and Penny Steynor.

Above: June Hyman in her studio with beautiful views over the valley. All of June's great landscape paintings are painted "en plein air" ( from life )

Above: Claudia Treagus uses a great "butchers block" covered in glass, for her palette. What a wonderful idea. Claudia paints eye catching figures in oils !!

Above: Mike Forester has a unique way of painting, starting on a black back ground ( the sky is left white) and then carefully adding his colour, while leaving the black as his shadows. His paintings are quite detailed and well executed.

Above: Penny Steynor in her spacious studio where she gives watercolour classes. She has stunning sketchbooks, full of wonderful "future" paintings. Penny, who also loves pastels and has made many of her own pastel colours, see below.

Genuine ochre rock that can be ground down and used in the making of pastels.

A wonderful morning was spent by SASA members visiting 5 Art Studios by local Artists
Simonstown: George and Venitia Eglington and Michelle Brourard
Glencairn Heights: Yvonne Ankerman
Kommetjie: Beth Louw and Valda Preen

George and Venitia's Studio: They had extended their double garage, added a dividing wall and created a space more than big enough for the two of them to paint in, including a stunning view over the Bay.
George paints lovely local scene in watercolour and Venitia paints great oil landscapes. Venitia kindly hosted coffee and great cheese scones.

Michelle's Studio has a wonderful large, warm and sunny courtyard studio with a Mediterranean feel.
Michelle painting wonderful abstracts in acrylic and watercolour landscapes.

Beth Louw paints mainly out doors and has a great spot in her house to display her paintings. Her gallery is open by appointment. Beth paints in oils, specialising in beautiful seascapes.

Valda Preen gives classes in her studio, on the beach in Kommetjie. A wonderful collection of her paintings where on view for us to look at. She kindly hosted tea and a scrumptious Chocolate cake.

Yvonne Ankerman's Studio in Glencairn heights overlooks False Bay. She has a collection of Pallet Knife flower paintings as well as "en Plein Air" landscapes. A batch of red underpainting canvases, drying and almost ready to paint on.
